NOTO È BELLA

An Artistic
Journey Home

Noto è Bella is a deeply personal artistic journey inspired by the beauty, history and soul of Noto, Sicily. For Bella Mulè, presenting this exhibition in Noto is more than the realisation of a solo exhibition.

Born and raised in Malta, but with paternal family roots in Noto, Bella has grown up with a strong connection to the city a connection shaped by family, memory, repeated visits and a profound sense of belonging. Over the years, Noto’s honey-coloured stone, magnificent Baroque architecture, ornate balconies, decorative details, colourful traditions and extraordinary Mediterranean light have become part of Bella’s visual memory.

The sea and peaceful sunsets of Lido di Noto carry an equally personal significance, recalling time spent there with family and the tranquillity of a place that has always felt like home. Noto è Bella transforms these memories and impressions into a contemporary collection celebrating place, heritage, identity and emotion.

Tradition Through a Contemporary Eye

The collection brings together painting, photography, watercolour, digital art and mixed media, reflecting Bella’s multidisciplinary artistic practice.

Some works begin with photography or digitally developed outlines, which provide a structural foundation before being transformed by hand through layers of paint, colour and texture. Others emerge entirely through traditional painting techniques, allowing the collection to move freely between precision and spontaneity, representation and abstraction.

Architectural forms are reimagined through unexpected colour. Sicilian decorative patterns and traditional tile designs become bold contemporary compositions. Gold echoes the warmth of Noto’s sunlit stone, while blues and turquoise recall the Mediterranean Sea. Texture, acrylic, oil, watercolour, gold ink and other mixed-media interventions allow familiar elements of Sicily to move beyond literal representation and become expressions of memory and feeling.

In Bella’s Words

“The photograph captures what I see; painting allows me to express
what I feel.”

Beyond the Beauty
of a Place

Although the exhibition is rooted in Noto, its story extends beyond architecture and landscape.

Works within the collection explore peace, hope, cultural identity and human connection. In La Pace, inspired by Noto’s celebrated Infiorata, the words “Ci vuole coraggio per fare la pace”, “It takes courage to make peace” transform the artwork into a message as well as an image.

Other pieces draw upon Sicily’s decorative heritage, its colours, lemons, patterns and traditional motifs, while more abstract compositions capture the contrast between warm earth and stone and the intense blues of the Mediterranean.

Together, the works present Noto not simply as a place to be observed, but as a place to be remembered, interpreted and felt.

A Return to

Her Roots

An Artistic Journey Home

The exhibition also carries a special connection to Bella’s family heritage.

The Mulè family has longstanding roots in Noto, including an artistic and musical legacy associated with Maestro Francesco Mulè, composer of the city’s Inno Nazionale di Noto. Presenting contemporary visual art under the Mulè name in the heart of the city therefore creates a meaningful dialogue between generations.

For Bella, Noto è Bella is ultimately an act of gratitude, to her family, to her Sicilian heritage and to a city that has remained part of her identity throughout her life.

From Noto
to Malta

Following its presentation in Sicily, the journey of Noto è Bella will continue in Malta, with the exhibition travelling to Siġġiewi in December 2026.

This continuation holds particular significance through the gemellaggio between Noto and Siġġiewi, allowing the exhibition to become a cultural bridge between the two localities and, more broadly, between Sicily and Malta, two Mediterranean islands connected through history, heritage and culture.
